Planned Trip : Devil's Highway Jeep Expedition March 7-9, 2009

Our 2nd Anniversary Trip ! Our 3rd year in a row to commemorate the trip that was the beginnings of the Jeep Expeditions Group, El Camino Del Diablo same name, new trails !

A full moon rises over the Devil's Highway on our 1st Expedition in March of 2007.

THIS IS A JEEP ONLY EVENT LIMITED TO MEMBERS OF THE JEEP EXPEDITIONS GROUP !

A 2 day with 3 day option trip over the El Camino Del Diablo or the Highway of the Devil. Our 2008 Trip will be limited to the 1st 16 Jeeps that sign up and will be held March 7-8(9th optional), 2008. This trip will start on the west end of the Devils Highway and end up on the east end in Ajo, AZ. The 3rd optional day will tour the back trails of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

If popular demand requires a third group of 8 has been formed that will start this trip from east to west on Friday, March 6th. This group will start at noon on Friday in Ajo and finish Sunday afternoon in either Fortuna or Welton. If further demand warrants, a 2nd group of 8 for east to west will be formed.

This trail has been in use for over 400 years and has been traveled by the Spanish Conquistadors in the 1600s to treasure seekers on their way to the California Gold Rush. The trail got its name because of the countless number of peoples lives it has claimed over the years due to its climate, remoteness and lack of safe drinking water. Illegal immigrants cross over this trail today, many still giving up their lives to the "Devil" in their quest to enter America. Since the advent of modern 4x4 vehicles, the trail has lost much of its danger.

While the trail has been used in the past by anything from 2WD to 4WD, the government has restricted travel now to registered 4WD vehicles by permit only to limit the impact on the environment. Not a technical trail, stock 4x4 vehicles can easily traverse the 140 miles from AJO to Yuma, AZ. Average speed on the trail as told by prior visitors is under 15mph. The road is a primitive dirt road that is not maintained. You can expect to encounter anything from a relatively smooth dusty road to washboard roads, rutted roads, soft sand roads, rocky roads and anything in between. A wide range of wildlife from Big Horn Sheep to Bobcats can be seen along this trail to many different varieties of plant life. One thing for sure, you will want to bring a camera as there are many beautiful sites to take pictures of on this trail in addition to many historic areas.

The area is closed 6 months a year (mid March to Sept) so that the Prong Horn Sheep can breed without the distractions of humans (illegal's and smugglers don't heed the closing).
