Planned Trip : Mojave Road - Barstow to Bullhead - Nov 15-16, 2008

Our 2nd trip to the Mojave Desert ! With a twist, we are running it in reverse this year and adding some new stuff !

THIS IS A JEEP ONLY EVENT LIMITED TO MEMBERS OF THE JEEP EXPEDITIONS GROUP !

More that 231 years of history on this 2 to 3 day trip on a pair of tracks that cross thru the middle of the Mojave National Preserve. November 2008. Our 2nd trip to the Mojave, reverse trip of 2007s route.

This famous trail is the Kit Carson Trail a/k/a Mojave Road, one of the early routes that brought American pioneers to California. A unique trail due to most of 138 miles is in the same condition as the pioneers would have found it, and a lot of the trail passes through country that is virtually unchanged since prehistoric times.

The first European to use the Mojave trail was probably Father Francisco Garces in 1776. When the Americans began pushing westward, Jedediah Smith, Kit Carson, John Fremont and other famous explorers made use of it to get to California.

The road bisects the Mojave National Preserve, wandering from waterhole to waterhole, and is mostly a 4-wheel-drive trail.

To those who took the Mojave Road by foot, horse and wagon, and the soldiers stationed along it to defend it from hostile Indians, this uncommonly beautiful country was a peculiar form of hell. Dry and desolate, it was and still is. Especially to those men and women coming from the lush forests of the east and south, the desert land was a barren expanse to be barely tolerated before arriving in the Promised Land of California.

Water is everything on the desert, and the locations of watering holes determined the route of the trail. Water was found at the end of each day's drive (about every 20 to 30 miles back in pioneer days) and it was reliable and safe.

These watering holes were favored ambush sites, and each one was defended by the US Army which established outposts, of sometimes just 2 or 3 men, who spent their tours of duty protecting gold-seekers and farmers heading for a better life in the golden valleys near the coast. The Army felt that by controlling the water, they controlled the road.

We will stop by the ruins of 1800's Cavalry forts/outposts, visit some of the "watering" holes that made this route possible in the old days, see ruins of settlers homes, ancient Indian petroglyphs, take part in traditions of "The Road" and much more.

Moondust, moonscape and great scenery are waiting to be your host for two days !

The plan is to meet on the Barstow side and camp Friday night at the Afton Canyon Campground or one of the motels nearby on the Interstate 5. Saturday and Sunday we traverse the famous Mojave Road. Sunday afternoon we end up in Bullhead City, AZ with an optional night at the Avi Casino or in Laughlin with the rest of the group heading back to Phoenix.
